The Northern Territory Government supports the messages and recommendations of the Inquiry, and additional areas need to be addressed if we are to overcome Indigenous disadvantage within a generation.
Closing the Gap goes beyond the recommendations of the Inquiry to address additional areas of: legislative reform, governance, employment and economic development, remote area policing, health, housing, communication and engagement. Closing the Gap also establishes a comprehensive framework for implementation of this long term generational approach and for negotiating responsibilities with the Australian Government, and with communities through local community boards.
The Northern Territory Government response to each Inquiry recommendation can be found in Appendix 1 of Closing the Gap. These responses reflect the need for a long term generational approach to overcoming Indigenous disadvantage, and as such go beyond the recommendations themselves.
